A joint sitting of Pakistan’s Parliament in Islamabad unanimously passed a resolution expressing solidarity with the victims of the Gul Plaza fire in Karachi and urging comprehensive measures to prevent future tragedies. Lawmakers from both the government and opposition condemned the blaze, offered condolences to the families of the deceased, and called for timely compensation for affected businesses and victims’ families.
The resolution also honoured the bravery of firefighters particularly Firefighter Furqan Ali, who died during rescue efforts and highlighted shortcomings in the city’s fire-safety infrastructure that worsened the disaster. It urged the Sindh government to conduct city-wide fire safety inspections of commercial and residential buildings, increase the number of fire stations and modern firefighting equipment, and adopt meaningful reforms to enhance public safety.
Federal support for recovery operations and assurances of ongoing solidarity with Karachi’s residents were reaffirmed. Several legislators, including PPP Senator Sherry Rehman, emphasised the need to avoid politicising the tragedy and focus on relief and rebuilding efforts.
