Pakistan Wheat Price Set at Rs4,500 per Maund for 2027

Pakistan wheat price 2027

Pakistan’s federal government has fixed the indicative wheat price at Rs4,500 per 40 kilograms for the 2027 crop season under a new National Wheat Policy developed after consultations with provincial governments. The announcement aims to support farmers, strengthen domestic wheat production and improve the country’s food security.

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain announced the decision in Islamabad on October 26, 2026. The new price is Rs1,000 higher than the rate set last year.

Government Plans Strategic Wheat Reserves of Six Million Tonnes

The government plans to maintain strategic wheat reserves of up to six million metric tonnes during the current year to help ensure stable supplies and protect against possible market disruptions.

Rana Tanveer said more than 1.3 million tonnes of wheat had already been released to provincial governments from the stocks of the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO). He added that arrangements could be made to import up to 550,000 tonnes if provincial requirements and market conditions made it necessary.

The minister said the country had sufficient stocks to meet domestic needs and ruled out a wheat shortage this year. He also stated that imported wheat would cost around Rs4,500 per 40kg, making domestic procurement a more suitable option for supporting local farmers.

New Wheat Price Aims to Protect Farmers

The government said the revised indicative price would help farmers manage rising production expenses, including fuel, fertiliser, seeds and electricity. Officials hope the announcement will encourage growers to increase wheat cultivation and invest in agricultural inputs.

Pakistan Kissan Ittehad President Khalid Mahmood Khokhar welcomed the decision, saying a predictable price could help restore farmers’ confidence after several years of financial pressure. Farmers had previously demanded a support price of Rs5,000 per 40kg, which is Rs500 higher than the newly announced rate.

However, the indicative price does not by itself guarantee that farmers will be able to sell their wheat at Rs4,500 per maund. The procurement arrangements and the availability of buyers will be important factors in determining how effectively the policy supports growers.

Government Vows to Address Artificial Price Increases

Rana Tanveer described recent increases in wheat prices as artificial and said the government would monitor the market to discourage hoarding, speculation and unjustified price hikes.

He added that the government was developing broader agricultural reforms, including policies related to seeds, olives and biotechnology. These initiatives are intended to improve crop productivity, promote modern farming methods and reduce production costs.

What the Wheat Policy Means for Consumers

The new price policy seeks to balance farmers’ earnings with stable wheat supplies for consumers. Increasing domestic production could reduce the need for imports, while strategic reserves could help the government respond to supply disruptions.

Nevertheless, the effect on flour prices will depend on actual wheat availability, procurement arrangements, market conditions and distribution costs. The government’s challenge will be to support farmers without placing additional pressure on households already facing high food expenses.
