Pakistan reopens Torkham & Chaman borders to fast-track UN aid into Afghanistan

Pakistan opens borders for UN aid to Afghanistan

Government of Pakistan has reopened its border crossings at Torkham Border Crossing and Chaman Border Crossing to facilitate rapid transit of relief supply shipments from the United Nations into Afghanistan.
The decision responds to a formal UN request, aiming to address acute shortages of food, medicine, and other essential supplies in Afghanistan.

Under instructions issued by the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan (in consultation with the Federal Board of Revenue and the Directorate General of Transit), customs officials began clearing shipments in phases — with priority given to containers carrying food, followed by medicines and medical equipment, then school-kits and other essential goods.

First-batch aid includes supplies from several UN agencies, notably 74 containers from UNICEF and 67 from World Food Programme (WFP), among others.

Officials emphasised the operation is strictly humanitarian, and that the phased clearance is meant to ensure orderly and timely delivery despite prior border restrictions.
