Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Islamabad on October 20, 2026, for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Pakistan and the Maldives. He was accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers and senior government officials.
The visiting president was received at Islamabad International Airport by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhary and Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training Wajiha Qamar. A 21-gun salute was accorded in his honour.
The visit, scheduled for October 20–22, comes as Pakistan and the Maldives mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, established on July 26, 1966. It is the first visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years.
President Muizzu to Meet Pakistan’s Top Leadership
During his stay, President Muizzu is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, who will host a state banquet in his honour. He will also hold official talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, including restricted and delegation-level discussions.
The leaders are expected to review bilateral relations and explore ways to expand cooperation across several sectors, including trade, investment, health, education, tourism, agriculture, defence, maritime security and climate change.
They are also expected to exchange views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.
Pakistan–Maldives Business Forum to Explore Investment Opportunities
A Pakistan–Maldives Business Forum is planned as part of the visit to encourage interaction between the countries’ business communities and identify new opportunities for trade and investment.
Officials have also indicated that several agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed during the visit. The proposed arrangements are intended to broaden cooperation across different sectors, although their specific terms and implementation details will depend on the agreements reached.
Visit Highlights Longstanding Diplomatic Relations
Pakistan and the Maldives established diplomatic relations in 1966 and have maintained cooperation through bilateral engagement and international forums.
The current visit provides an opportunity for both countries to review their relationship, discuss shared interests and explore areas where closer cooperation could deliver economic and diplomatic benefits.
The outcome of the meetings and any agreements signed during the visit will help determine the next steps in strengthening ties between Islamabad and Malé.
