Pakistan’s top leadership has called on the international community to help resolve the longstanding Jammu and Kashmir dispute, saying a just and peaceful settlement is essential for lasting peace and stability in South Asia. The message was delivered ahead of Kashmir Black Day on October 27, which marks the arrival of Indian forces in Srinagar on October 27, 1947.
Zardari Urges International Community to Act
President Asif Ali Zardari urged the United Nations and international human rights organisations to pay attention to the situation in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and support efforts to protect the fundamental rights of its people.
In his message, the president reaffirmed Pakistan’s political, diplomatic and moral support for Kashmiris and their right to self-determination. He said restrictions on fundamental freedoms, arrests and reports of human rights violations remained matters of concern.
Zardari also paid tribute to the sacrifices made by generations of Kashmiris, stressing the need for continued international engagement to achieve a peaceful resolution of the dispute.
Shehbaz Sharif Reaffirms Pakistan’s Position
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s position that the Kashmir dispute should be resolved in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
He expressed concern over restrictions on political activity and fundamental freedoms, as well as the prolonged detention of Kashmiri political leaders, activists and human rights defenders.
The prime minister also criticised India’s unilateral measures introduced on August 5, 2019, arguing that they had affected the territory’s political, legal and demographic character. These statements reflect Pakistan’s official position on the disputed region.
Kashmir Black Day Marks 79 Years of Dispute
Kashmir Black Day is observed annually on October 27. Pakistan uses the occasion to highlight the unresolved dispute, express solidarity with Kashmiris and call for implementation of relevant UN resolutions.
The issue has remained a major point of disagreement between Pakistan and India for decades. Pakistan maintains that a lasting settlement must respect the wishes of the Kashmiri people, while India considers Jammu and Kashmir an integral part of the country.
The international community has repeatedly been urged by Pakistan to support dialogue and diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the dispute peacefully.
