Karachi Water Shortage Worsens as K-Electric Power Failures Hit Supply

Karachi water shortage K-Electric power outages

Residents of Karachi are confronting a significant water shortage as prolonged and repeated power outages by K-Electric have disrupted the operations of key water pumping stations across the city. According to local reports, electricity interruptions at facilities such as the K-3 and Dhabeji pumping stations have repeatedly halted water distribution, resulting in severe supply shortfalls that have left many communities without regular access to piped water.

Officials from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) have attributed much of the crisis to unplanned power failures and technical faults in the distribution network, which have forced temporary shutdowns of critical pumping infrastructure. These disruptions have led to the loss of hundreds of millions of gallons of water on multiple occasions and have particularly impacted residential areas with high demand and limited storage capacity.

In some localities, such as North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, New Karachi, Saddar and Clifton, residents are experiencing low water pressure, intermittent supply, or complete outages, prompting growing frustration and hardship among households and businesses alike. KWSC representatives have urged the power utility to prioritise continuous electricity supply to pumping stations and are calling for long-term technical upgrades to better safeguard the city’s water distribution system against future breakdowns.
