Karachi University shifts morning classes online amid petrol crisis

The University of Karachi (KU) has decided to shift all morning classes online starting March 9 until the end of Ramazan, citing transportation difficulties caused by the ongoing petrol crisis and rising fuel prices. The decision was approved by Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi to facilitate students who may struggle to commute during the fuel shortage.

Under the new arrangement, morning classes will be conducted online, while evening classes were already being held virtually. The university has also issued instructions to reduce petrol consumption in official vehicles by 25% as part of measures to manage fuel usage during the crisis.

Meanwhile, NED University of Engineering and Technology has indicated it is ready to shift classes online if required. Vice Chancellor Dr Tufail Ahmed said the administration has completed preparations and will implement the decision immediately if directed by the government.

The move comes after the government increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre, a surge linked to global supply disruptions and rising crude oil prices amid escalating regional tensions.
