KARACHI, October 14, 2026: Construction and rehabilitation work has begun on more than 1,005 streets and roads in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, Karachi, as part of an initiative to improve local infrastructure and make neighbourhood roads more accessible for residents.
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Monem Zafar announced the development during a press conference on October 13, alongside local town officials. According to the announcement, the project will cover approximately 10.3 million square feet of road surfaces, using asphalt carpeting and paver blocks.
Road Rehabilitation Project Targets More Than 1,005 Streets
The project aims to improve damaged streets and roads across Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town. Better road surfaces could make daily travel easier for residents, motorcyclists, motorists and public transport users.
The planned work includes asphalt carpeting and the installation of paver blocks. However, a detailed street-by-street schedule and an overall completion deadline have not been announced in the available reports.
Parks, Markets and Sports Facilities Also Included
Alongside road construction, the town administration is working on improvements to public facilities. These initiatives include parks, playgrounds, youth centres, sports facilities, model dispensaries and urban forests.
Monem Zafar also highlighted plans to improve KDA Market and Dhoraji Market, with the aim of making local commercial areas more organised and improving facilities for shoppers and businesses.
Previous Roadwork and Infrastructure Projects
Zafar said the town administration had completed the re-carpeting of 42 roads over the previous three years. He also referred to the carpeting of approximately one million square feet of roads and the installation of thousands of streetlights.
Other projects highlighted during the briefing included a water-supply scheme costing Rs200 million. Zafar also said the administration had allocated funds for employee welfare, including salaries, pensions, medical expenses and outstanding payments. These figures were presented by the JI leader during his remarks.
Red Line BRT Delays Continue to Affect Commuters
The condition of University Road remains a concern because of delays in the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Zafar said the prolonged construction had contributed to traffic congestion and deteriorating road conditions, making daily journeys difficult for commuters.
He called for the project to be completed and highlighted the need for better coordination and timely execution of infrastructure schemes.

Local Government Funding Remains a Major Challenge
Zafar also called for greater financial resources and administrative powers for local governments, arguing that town administrations need adequate funding to address residents’ everyday problems effectively.
The latest road rehabilitation initiative is expected to improve neighbourhood infrastructure as work progresses. Its overall impact will depend on construction quality, timely completion and the maintenance of the repaired roads.
