In just 19 days, the surveillance systems of the Sindh Safe Cities Authority helped arrest 11 wanted suspects and recover 31 vehicles in Karachi.
According to the Karachi Safe City Authority’s Director-General Asif Ejaz Shaikh, facial-recognition and automatic number-plate-recognition (ANPR) cameras played key roles in the operation between October 20 and November 6.
The arrests include suspects wanted for cases of terrorism, attempted murder, illegal arms and snatching-theft.
The recovered vehicles were stolen or snatched, had fake plates or were in “applied for registration” status, with locations of seizure including Shaheen Complex, Data Corner and Avari Towers.
The authority noted that nearly 150,000 absconding suspects remain wanted by police in various cases, indicating the challenge ahead despite the success.
