Late Thursday evening, users across Karachi experienced widespread internet and online-service disruptions. According to outage-monitoring platform Downdetector, major providers like PTCL and StormFiber reported peak trouble between 9 pm and midnight. PTCL recorded 112 outage reports around 10:30 pm and StormFiber saw 59 during the same window.
Several popular apps and services were also affected. Users reported issues with WhatsApp (with 120 reports of problems: 55 % related to sending messages, 32 % to server connectivity, 13 % to app functionality), Instagram (134 reports), Facebook (65 reports), as well as minor outages for YouTube (16 reports) and X (4 reports).
While PTCL denied any service issues on its end, StormFiber’s automated system acknowledged “sudden degradation at one of our upstream [service providers]”, and said it was coordinating with that upstream provider to restore normalcy.
Though many users reported connectivity returning by morning, the outage highlighted the vulnerability of both internet-backbone infrastructure and everyday digital services in Karachi’s urban environment.
