Karachi Faces 100 MGD Water Shortage After Dhabeji Pumping Station Power Failure

Karachi 100 MGD water shortfall

Karachi is grappling with a severe 100 MGD (million gallons per day) water shortfall after a power failure at the Dhabeji pumping station.

The outage, caused by a breakdown in K-Electric’s supply, shut down key pipelines — specifically Line No. 1 and Line No. 5 — reducing the city’s total supply from around 650 MGD to roughly 550 MGD.

KWSC (Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation) engineers said repair work is underway: Line 5 is expected to be fixed in about 24 hours, while Line 1 may take up to four days.

Several areas — including Nazimabad, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Keamari, and Gulistan-e-Johar — are among the worst affected.
