Karachi crackdown on intercity buses — illegal bus-stands shut down citywide

Karachi crackdown on intercity buses

The administration in Karachi has launched a significant crackdown on intercity‐bus operations running from within the city limits, shutting down unauthorized bus stands and rerouting services to a designated terminal outside the city.

Authorities under Commissioner Karachi — supported by traffic police, transport and regional-transport authorities — ordered closure of illegal bus stands at locations such as Lea Market, Sohrab Goth, Al-Karam Square and others. Buses found operating from these venues were impounded and booking offices sealed, with FIRs filed against operators.

The crackdown aims to relieve severe traffic congestion caused by heavy intercity buses congregating in busy city areas — a longstanding source of gridlock and inconvenience for commuters. Under the new policy, all intercity buses must now operate via the official Karachi Bus Terminal on the Super Highway.

As part of enforcement, special monitoring teams have been deployed at major intersections and traffic-prone routes to prevent illegal bus-stand activity and ensure compliance with the relocation order.
