KARACHI, September 30, 2026 — The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has called on the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to extend the income tax return filing deadline by one month, proposing October 31, 2026, as the new cutoff date.
FPCCI Seeks One-Month Extension
FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh has formally requested the federal government and FBR to give taxpayers additional time to complete their income tax returns.
The existing statutory deadline is September 30. FPCCI says extending it to October 31 would give businesses, professionals and individual taxpayers more time to complete their filings.
IRIS Portal Issues Cited as Major Concern
According to FPCCI, taxpayers and tax practitioners have faced repeated problems with the FBR’s IRIS online filing system, including slow speeds, technical glitches and periods of downtime caused by heavy traffic.
The trade body says these disruptions have made it difficult for taxpayers to submit returns and wealth statements accurately before the deadline.
Changes in Tax Rules Add to Filing Challenges
FPCCI also pointed to recent amendments in tax laws and reporting requirements, saying taxpayers need additional time to understand the changes and complete their wealth reconciliations correctly.
The organisation further highlighted inflation and rising operating costs as challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises, some of which may still be completing audits and gathering documentation required for filing.

FBR Deadline Remains September 30
The request comes as the September 30 filing deadline approaches. Dawn reported that 5.181 million tax returns had been filed by September 29, while trade bodies and tax professionals continued to seek an extension, citing online traffic and delays in return forms.
FPCCI has urged the prime minister, finance minister and FBR chairman to consider the request and extend the deadline to October 31. The extension remains a request from FPCCI, rather than an announced change to the statutory deadline in the reports cited above.
