Heavy rain lashed Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Monday, September 28, 2026, disrupting traffic and prompting authorities to place emergency response agencies on high alert. The weather department has also forecast more rain and thunderstorms in parts of the region.
Rain Disrupts Traffic in Twin Cities
Intermittent heavy rainfall affected traffic movement across Islamabad and Rawalpindi, including the Islamabad Expressway. Strong winds also brought down a tree in Sector G-8, while rainwater accumulated on roads in Sector F-9.
In Rawalpindi, authorities placed WASA, Rescue 1122, the waste management authority and other relevant departments on high alert following the rainfall.
WASA Declares Rain Emergency
WASA Rawalpindi declared a rain emergency and deployed field staff and heavy machinery to low-lying areas. De-watering pumps were also positioned at vulnerable locations to remove accumulated rainwater and assist residents.
WASA Managing Director Azizullah Khan said Nullah Lai and other major drains were being continuously monitored. The water level in Nullah Lai was reported at five feet at Katarian and two feet at the Gowalmandi Bridge, with water flow remaining within normal limits.
Rainfall recorded at several locations included 24mm in Saidpur, 20mm in Pirwadhai, 19mm each in Bokra and the PMD area, and 18mm in Shamsabad.

More Rain Forecast in KP
The weather department has forecast additional rain and thunderstorms across several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda, Swabi and Nowshera. Hail and strong winds are also possible in some upper districts.
The Flood Forecasting Division said rain and thunderstorms could continue across Islamabad, upper Punjab and KP through September 29, while river flows at major rim stations were expected to remain normal.
