Gas price changes are making headlines again as the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) rolls out a new decision for fiscal year 2025–26. In a move that could ease the burden for some while tightening the squeeze for others, OGRA has officially approved revised rates for the country’s two major utility providers: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL).
Residents in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, served by SNGPL, will experience a 6.57% hike in the gas price, translating to an increase of Rs116.90 per MMBTU. This adjustment raises the prescribed price from Rs1,778.35 to Rs1,895.25 per MMBTU. The primary driver behind this surge is the financial burden of re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) diversion, a consequence of a federal cabinet decision made on October 30, 2023. OGRA has urged SNGPL to engage with the federal government to reassess gas supply management, considering sectoral energy demands and international obligations.
Conversely, customers in Sindh and Balochistan, under SSGCL’s jurisdiction, will benefit from a 5.9% reduction in the gas price. OGRA has proposed a decrease of Rs103.95 per MMBTU, lowering the prescribed price from Rs1,762.51 to Rs1,658.56 per MMBTU. This reduction is attributed to a more stable cost base and lower allowances for past year shortfall recoveries.
While OGRA has forwarded its determinations to the federal government for category-wise sale price advice, the final notification is pending. Until then, existing gas price rates will remain in effect. The federal government’s decision will be crucial in determining the final impact on consumers across different regions.
