Asim Munir has formally assumed a unified role as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) effective from today, following approval of the constitutional amendments that merge both posts under a single office.
With the passage of the amendment bill, all official documents, media references, and governmental communications will reflect the combined COAS-CDF title.
The reform — enacted through the latest amendment to the military’s governing laws — dissolves the previous top-level tri-service coordination post Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), replacing it with a unified command structure under the COAS-CDF.
Under the new setup, the federal government will define the duties and scope of the CDF role, including oversight of multi-domain integration, restructuring of armed forces, and ensuring jointness across Army, Navy, and Air Force.
As the first holder of the combined office, Asim Munir’s current tenure re-commences from the date of the new appointment.
