5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Gilgit-Baltistan and KP

5.8 magnitude earthquake Pakistan

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck parts of northern Pakistan on Monday, jolting Gilgit-Baltistan, Peshawar and adjacent areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported. The quake occurred at 11:21 a.m. with a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres and had its epicentre in northwestern Kashmir, according to PMD. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded a similar event with a magnitude of 5.7 at a 31 km depth about 58 km northwest of Barishal. Tremors were widely felt across the region, reflecting Pakistan’s location along several active tectonic plate boundaries that contribute to frequent seismic activity. At the time of reporting, there were no confirmed reports of significant damage or casualties, though authorities continue to monitor conditions and advise residents to take standard earthquake safety precautions.
