Dubai Announces 10-Day Mourning Period
The Dubai Ruler’s Court announced that the mourning period began Monday, September 21. Flags across the emirate will be flown at half-mast throughout the period.
The mourning period is scheduled to continue for 10 days, reflecting Sheikh Ahmed’s position and longstanding public service in Dubai and the UAE.
Sheikh Mohammed Pays Tribute to His Brother
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum mourned his brother in a message shared on social media, praying for his soul and expressing condolences to his family.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also offered condolences to Sheikh Mohammed and the Al Maktoum family, highlighting Sheikh Ahmed’s longstanding contributions to the development of the UAE.
Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also paid tribute to his late uncle, saying he would remain in the family’s memories and prayers.
Sheikh Ahmed’s Military and Public Service
Sheikh Ahmed was the fourth and youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the former Ruler of Dubai. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1975 and later served in Dubai’s Central Military Region, eventually becoming its commander-in-chief.
He also served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and held senior responsibilities in Dubai’s business and public sectors.
Major Contributions to Sports and Maritime Activities
Sheikh Ahmed was closely associated with Al Wasl Sports Club, serving as its president for decades. He was also involved in the development of horse racing in the UAE, including the establishment of Jebel Ali Racecourse.
His work also extended to maritime sports. He helped establish the Dubai International Marine Club and became its first chairman in 1988. He was later associated with the development of the Victory Team.
Condolences From Leaders
Following the announcement, condolences were expressed by senior UAE officials and leaders from outside the country. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed grief over Sheikh Ahmed’s death and offered condolences to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Al Maktoum family and the people of the UAE.
