The Karachi Press Club (KPC) has strongly condemned a recent wave of violent attacks, vandalism, and arson targeting major media outlets in Bangladesh, including Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, officials said. The press club also expressed serious concern about the reported harassment of veteran journalist and New Age editor Nurul Kabir.
In a statement, the KPC voiced alarm over reports that more than 100 journalists in Bangladesh have been detained on serious charges without due process since the formation of the country’s interim government, warning that such detentions create a climate of fear and suppress the public’s right to information.
The KPC demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all journalists currently in custody. It emphasized that a free, independent, and courageous press is fundamental to any democratic society and that efforts to silence media—whether through violence, legal intimidation, or harassment—represent violations of human rights, freedom of expression, and the rule of law.
The press body expressed solidarity with journalists in Bangladesh and urged authorities to ensure their safety, conduct transparent and impartial investigations into the reported attacks, and hold those responsible to account to safeguard democratic values.
