Karachi Bakery, a well-known bakery brand in India’s Hyderabad, was vandalised by members of the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. The incident took place around 3 p.m. at the Shamshabad branch, where BJP workers demanded the removal of the word “Karachi” from the bakery’s name, citing its connection to Pakistan.
According to local police, the BJP group gathered outside Karachi Bakery and staged a protest that escalated into vandalism. Law enforcement responded quickly to the disturbance. “No employees at the bakery were harmed. No serious damage was done,” said Inspector K Balaraju of RGI Airport Police, confirming the situation was brought under control swiftly.
Karachi Bakery was founded in 1953 by a Sindhi family who migrated to India from Karachi during the Partition. Despite its historical background, the bakery has faced repeated backlash for its name. The owners have consistently clarified that Karachi Bakery is an Indian establishment with no affiliations to Pakistan. They emphasize their commitment to Indian values and identity, maintaining that the brand name reflects heritage, not political alignment.
This recent attack follows a series of similar incidents. Just days earlier, protesters planted Indian flags outside Karachi Bakery‘s Banjara Hills branch in Hyderabad. A comparable episode occurred in 2019 after the Pulwama terror attack, when the bakery became a target of nationalist sentiment.
Meanwhile, in a stark contrast, Bombay Bakery — a popular establishment in Pakistan’s Hyderabad named after the Indian city of Mumbai — continues to operate peacefully, free from political protests or vandalism. The double standard highlights ongoing cross-border sensitivities surrounding brand names linked to India and Pakistan.
Despite the challenges, Karachi Bakery remains one of India’s iconic culinary brands, known for its signature fruit biscuits and traditional baked goods. The brand’s loyal customer base continues to support it amid ongoing political controversies.
