Yemen’s Houthi forces claimed Saturday that they launched missile and drone attacks against what they described as “sensitive sites” in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, as fighting between the group and Saudi-backed forces continues to intensify.
The claim came after residents reported explosions in Riyadh and a large column of black smoke was seen rising near King Khalid International Airport. Reuters footage showed flames and smoke in an area near what appeared to be fuel storage facilities.
Saudi Arabia Says Missile Was Intercepted
Saudi Arabia’s military coalition said its air defenses intercepted a ballistic missile launched toward Riyadh. The coalition also said it thwarted attempted attacks targeting the Saudi cities of Taif, Yanbu, Farasan and Bish.
Saudi authorities issued overnight warnings to residents in Riyadh and Al-Kharj, advising people to move to safe locations and avoid open areas. The alerts were later lifted.
Saudi authorities did not immediately provide details about damage in Riyadh. However, flight tracking data indicated significant disruption at King Khalid International Airport, including delays and cancellations.
Houthis Also Claim Attack on Aramco Facility
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group carried out two operations using ballistic and cruise missiles and drones.
According to the Houthi statement, one operation targeted sites in Riyadh, while another targeted facilities belonging to Saudi oil company Aramco in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu. The group said the attacks were carried out in response to Saudi attacks on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
The Houthis did not provide specific details identifying the locations they claimed to have struck in Riyadh. Saudi authorities also did not immediately confirm the Houthi claims regarding specific targets.
Escalation Raises Regional Security Concerns
The latest incident comes amid a wider escalation between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. The group has increased attacks against Saudi territory and shipping in the Red Sea, while Saudi-backed forces have continued fighting Houthi forces inside Yemen.
The attack also adds pressure to a region already facing broader military tensions. The United Nations and Gulf Cooperation Council have condemned attacks affecting civilian areas and called for greater regional stability.
Saturday’s reported attack marks a significant development because Riyadh had not been the focus of reported Houthi attacks during the current escalation that began in July.
