Spielberg’s Mother Was a Huge Judge Judy Fan
Spielberg said his mother, Leah Adler, was a devoted fan of Judith Sheindlin and regularly watched Judge Judy. Her admiration for the television judge eventually led Spielberg to contact Sheindlin.
According to Sheindlin, Spielberg called her office and explained that his mother wanted to meet the judge. She agreed to the meeting and later arranged a special courtroom appearance as part of Adler’s 90th birthday celebration.
Spielberg and His Sisters Take Part in Mock Case
In the staged courtroom episode, Spielberg and Annie appeared as the plaintiffs against their sisters Nancy and Sue. The playful dispute centered on expenses related to their mother’s birthday celebration.
Nancy and Sue had purchased various items for the party, while Spielberg and Annie were portrayed as refusing to pay the bill. Among the unusual items presented in court were Groucho Marx novelty glasses, which Sue connected to a photograph of their mother wearing similar glasses.
Spielberg Eventually Drops the Mock Lawsuit
As the mock proceedings came to an end, Sheindlin reflected on how the four siblings viewed their mother in different ways.
Spielberg then announced that he and Annie would withdraw their mock lawsuit against their sisters. Sue responded humorously that they did not feel guilty about suing them, keeping the lighthearted tone of the family appearance.
Family Connection Remembered in New TV Special
Spielberg’s appearance is being revisited in Judge Judy: Unfiltered, Unforgettable, a CBS special marking three decades of Sheindlin’s television career.
The 90-minute special features Spielberg along with other celebrities, including RuPaul, Samuel L. Jackson and Amy Poehler. It premiered on CBS on September 22 and is also available through Paramount+.
