Satish Shah passes away at 74 after prolonged illness

Satish Shah, the veteran Bollywood actor celebrated for his remarkable comic timing and versatility, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 74 after a prolonged battle with kidney disease, Indian media reported on Saturday.

According to reports, Satish Shah had been admitted to a local hospital in Mumbai after his condition deteriorated at home, but he could not survive. His final rites are scheduled to take place in Mumbai tomorrow (Sunday).

The news of Satish Shah’s passing was first confirmed by filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, who shared the actor’s picture and a heartfelt message on Instagram: “Sad and shocked to inform you that our dear friend and a great actor Satish Shah has expired a few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja Hospital where he breathed his last.”

In a video message, Pandit expressed his grief, saying, “I would like to share some very sad news. Our friend, a great actor, Satish Shah, passed away due to kidney failure. He suddenly fell ill at home and was rushed to Hinduja Hospital, Shivaji Park, where he breathed his last. His body will be brought to his Bandra residence.”

He added, “It’s a huge loss to our industry. I have worked a lot with Satish — he was not only a fine actor but a wonderful human being.”

Satish Shah began his acting career in the 1970s and rose to fame with the 1983 cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, a film that cemented his place as one of Indian cinema’s most gifted comic actors.

Throughout his illustrious career, Satish Shah shared the screen with some of Bollywood’s biggest stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Saif Ali Khan.

Beyond films, Satish Shah left an unforgettable mark on Indian television through his performance in the hit sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, where he portrayed 55 different characters in 55 episodes — a feat that remains unmatched in television history.

Satish Shah was last seen in the 2017 reboot of the popular show Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. The actor is survived by his wife, designer Madhu Shah, as the film and television fraternity mourns the passing of one of its most beloved and talented performers.
