A constitutional petition has been filed in a Karachi District and Sessions Court against the Indian film Dhurandhar over what the petitioner calls anti-Pakistan and defamatory content in the movie’s promotional material. The petition, lodged by Muhammad Amir, a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) activist, alleges that the Dhurandhar trailer uses images of the late former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, PPP flags and rally footage without permission, and wrongly portrays the PPP as sympathetic to terrorists. It also criticises the depiction of Lyari as a “terrorist war zone”, arguing that it harms Pakistan’s reputation and incites hatred.
Amir has named the film’s director, producers, lead actors and several crew members as proposed accused, and urged the court to direct police to register a First Information Report (FIR) and ensure a fair investigation. The petition cites several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code relating to defamation, criminal intimidation, incitement to riot and promoting enmity among groups.
The move comes amid broader criticism in Pakistan of Dhurandhar, including objections from the widow of martyred officer Chaudhry Aslam over his portrayal in the film’s trailer.
