September 21, 2026 — Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi has confirmed that Maharaja 2 is in development, giving fans an update on the highly anticipated sequel to his 2024 thriller.
The actor revealed that director Nithilan Saminathan has already narrated the story of the sequel to him. Sethupathi said he was impressed by the story and praised the filmmaker’s writing.
Vijay Sethupathi Confirms Maharaja 2
Speaking at the audio launch of his upcoming film Baththa, Sethupathi confirmed that work on Maharaja 2 has progressed beyond early discussions.
He said Saminathan recently shared the sequel’s story with him and described it as impressive. The actor also expressed his enthusiasm about working with the director again.
However, details about the sequel’s plot, additional cast, filming schedule and release date have not yet been announced.
Actor Offers to Work for Free in Hollywood Remake
Sethupathi also spoke about the upcoming Hollywood remake of Maharaja. He said producer Sudhan Sundaram informed him that the remake rights had been sold to a Hollywood agency.
In response, Sethupathi jokingly offered to appear in the American adaptation without charging a fee if the makers gave him a role. He also said he has long wanted to work in Hollywood and was happy that his film was reaching an international audience.
Matthew McConaughey Rumoured for Hollywood Version
The Hollywood remake is reportedly being developed with an A-list actor in consideration. Matthew McConaughey has been mentioned in reports as a possible lead, but his casting has not been officially confirmed.
Producer Sudhan Sundaram has said that only the agency handling the project can confirm the final casting. The remake is reportedly expected to move into production next year.
Maharaja Success Leads to International Remake
Released in 2024, Maharaja was directed by Nithilan Saminathan and starred Vijay Sethupathi alongside Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam and Sachana Namidass.
The neo-noir thriller follows a barber whose complaint about a missing dustbin gradually develops into a much darker story. The film became a major commercial success and gained additional international attention following its release in China and on streaming platforms.
With Maharaja 2 now confirmed and the Hollywood adaptation moving forward, Vijay Sethupathi’s acclaimed film franchise is entering a new phase.
