LAHORE, September 30, 2026 — Lahore is set to host a 10-day Basant festival from January 29 to February 7, 2027, under a schedule approved by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Celebrations will pause on February 5 to observe Kashmir Day.
Basant Festival Dates Announced
According to the Punjab government statement reported by Dawn, Basant festivities will begin on January 29 and continue through February 7, with February 5 designated as a one-day break.
The latest announcement revises an earlier plan for a three-day Basant celebration in March 2027. The festival was previously held in Lahore from February 6 to 8, 2026, following a lengthy gap.
Government Orders Preparations for Extended Celebration
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed relevant departments to begin preparations ahead of the extended festival. According to the government statement, authorities have been instructed to focus on public convenience and safety during the celebrations.
The chief minister said the event would highlight Punjab’s cultural heritage and Lahore’s historical traditions. She also urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and follow the applicable safety requirements.
Basant Had Been Banned Since 2007
Basant and kite flying were banned in Punjab in 2007 following deaths and serious injuries associated with hazardous kite strings and celebratory gunfire. Lahore’s festival returned in February 2026 after the long interruption, under regulations governing kite flying and public safety.
The Punjab government had announced new rules for kite flying in May as preparations for the 2027 festival began.

Safety Measures to Remain a Key Focus
Authorities have been directed to ensure that the longer celebration does not compromise public safety. The government statement said the success of the 10-day festival would depend on compliance with safety regulations and responsible conduct by participants.
