The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) significantly raised water and sewerage tariffs

At the Chairman Secretariat Karsaz, Mayor Karachi, and Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation  KWSC Chairman Murtaza Wahab held the sixth board meeting, which made the decision. Rumor has it that the Karachi board authorized a 23% fee hike, with water prices increasing by 9% and sewage bills by 14%. At first, it was supposedly decided to keep the rate rise secret to lessen public outcry.

Approval of the minutes from the last board meeting, evaluation of the status of earlier decisions, and authorization of the annual budget of Rs 46.259 billion for the fiscal year 2024-25 were all items on the extensive agenda of the meeting.

Retail and bulk clients’ water and sewage service prices were approved, among other important decisions. Furthermore, the Water Corporation Regulations 2024 were amended and approved, emphasizing groundwater extraction, usage, and management. With the 65 MGD, increased water supply project came the formation of a committee to monitor the phase one decommissioning of High Point Four Bay.

New roles were established, consultants were appointed, and existing ones were renamed during the meeting, all by the Water Corporation Act 2023. Residents of Karachi are already facing economic difficulties, such as inflation and increasing utility expenses, and now they have to deal with a rate rise.
