The First Congo virus case

The first Congo virus case this year has been recorded in Karachi, and the patient is now undergoing treatment at Jinnah Hospital.

The patient, a 32-year-old man, was taken to Jinnah Hospital’s Ward 5 with a high temperature and diarrhea. The situation worsened when laboratory testing revealed the presence of the deadly Congo virus, raising concerns throughout the institution.

According to hospital officials, the patient’s condition demanded immediate transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU). “Congo virus is a life-threatening infection with a survival rate of only 10%,” they pointed out.

The Congo virus case, commonly reported during Eid-ul-Adha owing to increased livestock movement, is transmitted from animals to people and can potentially spread further from there.

Dr. Nausheen, Deputy Executive Director of Jinnah Hospital, said the patient will be sent to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIIED) for specialized care.

Similarly, in November 2023, a 42-year-old male from Karachi’s East District was diagnosed with the Congo virus. The representative for the Sindh Health Department stated that the individual was taken to a private hospital after displaying viral symptoms.

Medical specialists have recognized Congo virus symptoms as a decline in white blood cells, a high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, weariness, weakness, sleepiness, and mouth ulcers. – supernews.pk
